College cites software quality, company experience as selection criteria
DES MOINES, IA: Palmer College of Chiropractic--the first chiropractic college in the world, with more graduates than any other chiropractic college--recently announced that it has chosen Future Health eConnect as its new clinic EHR/practice management software.
The college expects to go live with the software in late summer 2011.
Benefits for both the college and its students
"We've chosen to implement Future Health eConnect because it's integrated, high-quality, easy-to-use software. And it's going to do four specific things for Palmer," said Dr. Kurt Wood, Palmer College's vice chancellor for clinic affairs.
"First, by implementing eConnect in our three campuses located in Iowa, Florida, and California, we're better preparing students for clinical practice. Soon all DCs will be using EHR ... it's just part of the changing healthcare landscape. And now Palmer grads will have actual hands-on clinical experience using this technology.
"Second, eConnect is going to improve efficiencies for faculty clinician mentors by eliminating the redundancies of data entry.
"Our patients are going to have a better clinic experience, because they will have technology to integrate their care with the entire health care spectrum of providers through health information exchange and interoperability.
"Lastly, when our students graduate, they can get the EHR/practice management software that they've used in clinic ... and to which they've become accustomed ... absolutely free," Wood said.
About Future Health eConnect
Future Health eConnect's base software is free and includes all the basics for EHR/practice management, including integrated scheduling, documentation, EHR (electronic health records), billing and patient education.
Doctors of chiropractic can then choose to customize their free Future Health eConnect software by adding affordable eConnect Apps for efficiency, specialties, techniques and a guaranteed EHR/ARRA Certification App to help DCs qualify for up to $44,000 from government incentives in adopting a certified EHR.
Colleges will use the eConnect College App, a customized practice management system specifically for chiropractic colleges.
eConnect uses secure, affordable Amazon servers for data storage and security, also called "Cloud technology."
In-depth research and detailed implementation plans put Future Health at the top of the list
"There were a lot of reasons we chose Future Health's eConnect," Wood said.
"But what it really came down to was the fact that Future Health is the chiropractic college expert. And it shows in every aspect of their research and planning ... from in-depth due diligence to their specific, detailed implementation planning."
Future Health's due diligence process: touching every part of the clinic
According to Future Health's Founder and Chairman Dr. Steven J. Kraus, the research process for each college is perhaps the most important aspect of the implementation process.
"As part of our standard process, Future Health's experienced personnel of college implementation experts conducts in-depth interviews with clinicians and students. We observe patient flow and clinic workflow. We talk with clinic managers and front desk staff. And we really work to get a thorough understanding of each process and the associated paperwork so we can maximize efficiencies and make existing processes even better," said Kraus.
Experienced IT professionals execute detailed analyses
Kraus went on to say that the Future Health team includes IT professionals with specific experience implementing EHR/practice management software in the college and the college clinic setting.
"We analyze all of the school's existing clinic processes and collect every form used," said Kraus. "Then we evaluate literally every aspect of the clinic's workflow to make sure all information and processes are still in place, but in a more streamlined and effective manner.
"Our IT experts also evaluate the university's existing IT infrastructure, including internet capabilities. In Palmer's case, by switching from an in-clinic server to secure Amazon servers ... known as Cloud technology ... the school will also have significantly upgraded internet capabilities and the most robust storage and security, while minimizing costs that large teaching institutions normally incur with on-site servers.
"We are able to uncover money-saving opportunities to reduce hardware costs and save time on a significant scale, as well as provide upgraded internet capabilities," added Kraus.
Next steps
According to Wood, the school is expected to implement Future Health eConnect in late summer 2011.
"Future Health has a very detailed implementation plan, with specific tasks being carried out over the next nine months," Wood said.
"We're excited to get eConnect installed and let our students begin using the next great thing in EHR/practice management software."
