SAR Conference and Call for Abstracts
The Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) has issued a call for abstracts for its upcoming conference, Translational Research in Acupuncture: Bridging Science, Practice and Community, held March 19-21, 2010 at the Sheraton Hotel in Chapel Hill, NC.
Abstracts are solicited for the areas of clinical research, basic science and research methodology pertaining to acupuncture, as well as other components of OM, including traditional herbs, tai chi and qi gong. Please upload abstracts to www.softconf.com/a/sar2010 by Aug. 1, 2009. Abstracts submitted after this date will not be considered. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Prospective speakers will be informed by Oct. 1, 2009 as to if their papers have been accepted for oral or poster presentation. See www.acupunctureresearch.org for more details.
AAAOM Welcomes New Lobbying Team
On March 25, 2009, the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) signed a contract with Sam Brunelli, of Team Builders International (TBI), to serve as its new lobbying firm. Brunelli brings to the table an extensive portfolio of experiences and contacts. He served President Ronald Reagan as director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Education. In 1988, he became the executive director and CEO of the American Legislative Exchange Council. During his eight-year tenure, the ALEC became the nation’s foremost legislative organization dedicated to limited government, state sovereignty and free-market enterprise. In 1996, Mr. Brunelli formed Team Builders International to lobby at the federal, state and local level.
In addition to his lobbying experience, Brunelli also has direct experience with the benefits of acupuncture treatment. After college, he was a walk-on left defensive end and left offensive tackle, starting for the Denver Broncos for nearly a decade. Having received acupuncture with considerable success as a past NFL football star, he highly respects its use in sports rehabilitation.
Samra University Opens Clinic
The newly opened Samra Acupuncture Spinal Center provides traditional, holistic Oriental medicine from leading Korean doctors in a modern setting. The clinic is affiliated with Samra University, a private, nonprofit corporation that is the oldest school of Oriental Medicine in the United States. Samra University teaches classes in Chinese medical theory, acupuncture, Chinese herbology and clinical work, along with the basic sciences, anatomy and physiology. Many of the Spinal Center doctors teach at the Samra University.
The Samra Acupuncture Spinal Center is a 10,000 square-foot facility that features medical equipment including MRI and X-Ray machines, PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System) and EMRs (Electronic Medical Records), along with 20 private patient rooms. It also has a herbal dispensary.
The staff are Oriental Medical Doctors (OMDs) with PhD degrees from Kyunghee Oriental Medical University in Seoul, Korea. These degrees entail 10 years of full-time education, six in Oriental medical universities and four interning and performing residency at Oriental medicine hospitals.
